Saturday 25th February
To tie in with world access day which is taking place on 10th March, we have again teamed up with the Guernsey Disability Alliance (GDA) to promote a new sporting initiative via the We All Matter Eh? platform, entitled #AccessibleActivities.
The We All Matter Eh? brand is the brainchild of the GDA, and this particular initiative aims to showcase the wide variety of sports & physical activities that are accessible to islanders with a disability, living here in Guernsey.
We have found around 20 activities to date that cater for people with disabilities, and we are sure we have just uncovered just the tip of the iceberg. This is just the start as others will pop up, which to date have been previously hidden away. There are pockets of great opportunities that remain hidden, and we want to change that!
Through the campaign we aim to raise awareness of all the opportunities available to islanders with a form of impairment. We aim to help the clubs, groups and classes increase their participation whilst educating and empowering them to become more accessible.
The We All Matter Eh? brand is all about empowering disabled islanders, their families and carers to have a voice, giving them a platform for their thoughts and opinions to be heard. For this initiative in particular, we have given them a podium upon which their sporting achievements can be showcased and through this campaign we are offering them the opportunity to share their sporting stories of success.
I have been truly humbled by some of the people we have met on this 3 month journey, it’s about time their inspirational stories are told! I don’t want to spoil the surprise and share too much content from our campaign about what sports you can expect to see showcased, so I have only included a few behind the scenes shots of us filming to give you a quick flavour of the people we have met.
We have met some real role models, and whether our campaign just encourages someone who perhaps is a bit reluctant to pick up the phone or walk through the door of a sports club to just make contact with the club, or whether it inspires them to follow in the footsteps of some of the adrenaline junkies we have met along our journey and soar into the air in a wheelchair then we have succeeded!
At the time of writing there was just over 1 week before the campaign material is released so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter so you don’t miss anything, but keep your eyes peeled on the week beginning Monday 6th March to see the role models of disability sport, here in Guernsey, hit the headlines!
